THE PAWN WHO BECAME KING

(BOOK-TV SERIES-MOVIE-ALBUM)

March 4th 1981

It was 1981 the fourth day of March. The sky was clear and the sun was shining like never seen before. The 1st and 3rd of the month checks had the streets on the move. The local bars were jam packed with people drinking their favorite beer and searching for their favorite type of drug. It wasn’t cold outside, but it was not hot either. Some would say it was perfect sweat suit weather because all the hustlers were standing in front of the local bars wearing Adidas and Nike track suits with matching Kangas, heavy gold rope chains and diamond studded four-finger rings.

It was early in the morning, but the Twenty Grand was packed from wall to wall with a variety of different people. The Twenty Grand was the place to be in the 80's in Erie, Pennsylvania. Didn't matter what time of the day, if you wanted to score your favorite drug you could just pull up and two or three dealers would run to your window and ask you what you needed. On the inside the music was blasting The O'Jays “For the Love of Money”while joints were being lit and forty ounces of Colt 45 were being cracked open and sipped.

Somewhere across town Donna was trying to find a ride babysitter for her first-born son Phel . Her water had

broke and she was about to have her second child.

“Are you okay?” asked Phel. Phel was only five years old but he could tell something was wrong with Donna from

the look of frustration on her face.

Donna said, “I'm okay, Phel. I just need someone to watch you while I go to the hospital to have your little

brother.”

Phel was excited to be having a baby brother on the way so he began to do a dance around the house singing to

himself, “I'm going to be a big brother.” While doing the running man dance.

Donna had called all three of her sisters but just her luck nobody seemed to be home. The contractions were getting stronger and Phel was getting on her last nerve singing his “I'm going to be a big brother” song. So Donna called the Twenty Grand and asked if Peter Gun was there.

Peter Gun was her younger brother who earned the name“gun” on the East side of Detroit, Michigan for being quick to let his gun bust if the situation called for it. Phel's father and Peter Gun were best friends back in Detroit; so Peter Gun would drive 80 East and 75 North when he wanted to score. Then he would sit at the Twenty Grand all day and sell the best product in town. Donna knew he would be at the Twenty Grand because it was the beginning of the month.

“Can you check if Peter Gun is there?!” yelled Donna into the phone. The bartender could barely hear her because James Brown “The Big Pay Back” was blasting through the bar.

“Hold on, I'll check.” said the bartender. “He might be around back shooting craps.”

The dice game was huge. All the hustlers were in a big circle taking turns throwing the dice off the wall. When the bartender spotted Peter Gun he was counting up his winnings from betting with the dice.

“Donna wants you on the phone inside the bar!” yelled the bartender. “And it sounds important.”

“Tell her I'm gambling, and I'll call her back later,” said Peter Gun.

The bartender just rolled her eyes and went back in the bar. When she got back to the phone Donna had hung up.

Donna didn't want to call her husband Debo at work because they had been arguing and a few days ago Donna left home and went to her mother's house. Now she was having contractions and needed a ride to Hamot hospital. Tired of waiting for a ride Donna told Phel to go grab his coat and shoes so they could start walking. The contractions were hurting but she still refused to call Debo.

Donna had fallen in love with Debo after leaving Detroit. Phel's dad had been a ruthless drug dealer who at times seemed heartless; so when Donna met Debo who was a hard working country nigga from Mississippi, she fell in love and married him. But Debo turned out to be just as violent as Big Phel and Donna wanted out of the marriage.

Right before Donna and Phel walked out the door the phone rang and it was Peter Gun.

“Ill be there in ten minutes,” he said.

“Push he is almost here !” yelled the doctor and Donna pushed as hard as she could.

By now all three of Donna's sisters were at the hospital. Bernice, Nan and Star were all in the waiting room.

“Push!” yelled the doctor again. So Donna pushed and out came a bright yellow baby.

Debo wasn't there to cut the umbilical cord so Pauline cut it for her grandson. Twenty minutes later the room was filled, and everybody wanted to know what the baby's name would be.

Donna said, “His name is Pawn and one day he will be King.”

Nan and Star just sat there looking confused because Pawn was bright yellow but Debo was black as oil. Bernice gave them a look telling them to cut it out. Today would be a happy moment, who Pawn's father was could be discussed another day.
